9:00am - 4:00pm
Join internationally renowned artists, poets, writers and
scholars to see, hear, and discuss art inspired by journeys
throughout the world.
The aura of unfamiliar places has enticed artists throughout
the twentieth century to leave home, trading the known
for the unknown, and at times enduring long journeys. Their
voyages have been inspired by scholarly, spiritual, or
personal interests in diverse cultures and their traditional
art making methods, or by the opportunity to experience
a different way of life.
This interdisciplinary symposium explores the relationship
between travel and creativity, while questioning the meaning
of place.
Held in conjunction with the exhibition American Identities:
Twentieth-Century Prints from the Nancy Gray Sherrill,
Class of 1954, Collection currently on view at the Davis.
Works by George Bellows, Chuck Close, Stuart Davis, Lesley
Dill, Childe Hassam, Edward Hopper, Alex Katz, John Marin,
Miriam Schapiro, Kiki Smith and James Abbott McNeill Whistler,
to name but a few, are on view in this survey of American
art.
