Picasso began this etching in response to the Spanish Civil
War shortly before he was invited to produce a mural for the
Spanish Pavilion of the 1937 Paris World’s Fair. Dream
and Lie of Franco, was included in a portfolio with a Surrealist-inspired
poem written by Picasso, and was available for sale at the
fair to benefit the Republican cause.
