Bricks and Mortarboards: Wellesley College 1875 - 1975
March 29 – June 17, 2001
View of Library, College Hall, Before 1914

This exhibition looked at three moments in the college's past spaced at approximately 50 year intervals: the 1870s when it was founded; 1920s when Wellesley established itself as one of the premier women's colleges in the country and shaped the campus in essential ways as we know it today; and the 1970s when Wellesley, after considerable debate about going coed, rededicated itself to its mission as a women's college and sought ways to modernize the college's image and offerings. In each of these three periods, Wellesley's identity as a liberal arts college for women was under attack—sometimes from without, sometimes from within. This show examined the way Wellesley shaped itself in response to and in defiance of these challenges.
