Nazi-Era Provenance Project

In keeping with the guidelines issued by the American Association of Museums (AAM) in 1999 and 2001, the Davis Museum has increased efforts to determine the provenance—or history of ownership—for works of art in our collection, with special emphasis on objects that may have changed hands during the Nazi era, 1933-1945. During this period, the Nazi government unlawfully appropriated millions of works of art and other cultural property in Europe, and few were returned to their lawful owners.

As recommended by the AAM, the Davis Museum prioritized the documentation of known provenance for European paintings created before 1946 and acquired after 1932. Listed below are Davis collection paintings and sculpture that may have changed hands in continental Europe during 1933-1945.

Provenance information for these objects is incomplete. Research is underway, including the consultation of all museum files, relevant archives, auction and exhibition catalogues, monographs, collection catalogues, dealer records, and publications documenting the Nazi-era activities of dealers and collectors. Curators and researchers are also conferring with outside scholars and conducting physical examinations of objects. Still, it is sometimes the case that all stages in the ownership history of a work of art cannot be documented because of incomplete or inaccurate information. While this research project is intended to identify works of art in the collection that may have been stolen or seized by the Nazis, it is important to note that gaps in the history of ownership do not necessarily indicate that a work of art was unlawfully appropriated.

All of the paintings and sculpture listed below are also included on the AAM’s searchable Nazi-Era Provenance Internet Portal.

If you would like more information about the Davis Museum's provenance research project or have information concerning a particular work of art, please contact Dabney Hailey, Linda Wyatt Gruber '66 Curator of Painting, Sculpture, and Photography.
