Photography & Filming Policy

Personal Use:

Visitors are allowed to take photographs or video inside the Museum’s permanent collection galleries if the photographs/videos are intended for personal use only and not for reproduction, publication or any commercial purpose. No photography using flash, artificial lights, or tripods is permitted. Photography is not permitted in any special or temporary exhibition, or of any object not belonging to Wellesley College.

Commercial/non-profit Educational Use:

Photographs of many objects in the Museum’s collection are available in black and white, color slides or large format transparencies. Permission to reproduce photographs supplied by the Museum must be obtained in writing from the Assistant Museum Registrar.

Filming in Museum Galleries for Film Crews and Media:

Filming is permitted for non-commercial or educational use only. Permission from the Director or Associate Director is required for any commercial purpose.

Written notification to the Museum Registrar’s Office and the Security Manager should be made at least 24 hours in advance of a Tuesday - Friday arrival. Three days advance notice is required for a Monday arrival. Notification should include the date, the expected arrival and departure times, the estimated number of people involved in filming, and the intended location of the shoot. The Security Manager and Registrar will advise on conflicts in the schedule and any restrictions on objects that may not be filmed.*

* Objects on loan to the Davis Museum may not be filmed without advance permission from the lenders. Information on restrictions and permission may be obtained in advance through the Museum Registrar’s Office. Objects that are off-limits to film crews (in addition to objects that do not belong to Wellesley) are those that are light and heat sensitive.

Security personnel must be present with the film crew at all times. Film crewmembers must sign in and wear DMCC Visitor ID badges. Equipment should be unloaded at the DMCC loading dock.

The Registrar, Assistant Registrar, or Preparator must approve the location, set up and intensity of lighting before filming begins. Lights must be turned off whenever possible to reduce the amount of exposure time on objects.

Care must be taken at all times to prevent damage to objects and building, and to prevent obstructing traffic flow and visitor accessibility. When possible, filming should be scheduled during regular weekday business hours, preferably on a Monday or before the museum opens to the public at 11am.
