The Permanent Collection: American Art

What is considered American art—its styles, subject matter, and sources—shifts over time as the borders and peoples encompassed by this term change.  This gallery contains works of art from the Davis Museum’s permanent collection broadly termed American, which encompasses art of the area that is now the United States as well as Mexcio and South America. Some works of art on view predate the term, and contemporary objects reflect more recent global definitions of art. Together, these paintings and sculptures raise questions about the complex issues surrounding what it means to call an artwork—or, in turn, a person, place, or culture—American today.
